Dr. Kiernan specializes
in the diagnosis and treatment of minor head injury, with more than forty years of experience.
Dr. Kiernan has worked in the San Francisco Bay Area as a clinical neuropsychologist since 1973. He has held clinical appointments at both Stanford University Medical Center and UC Medical Center in San Francisco. He has given a number of training workshops in neuropsychology for psychologists, and he was the co-founder of the Neurobehavioral Unit at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for the evaluation of medical causes of acute psychiatric disorders. He was the lead clinician involved in the development of a cognitive screening examination, Cognistat, the most frequently used cognitive screening test in North America. He has recently worked with a software team to develop both online and downloadable versions of this test. He is in the process of completing a book, Ten Myths of Neuropsychology, a clinical assessment handbook for neuropsychologists.
Dr. Kiernan has specialized in the diagnosis of mild head injuries and concussions, throughout his career. He has served as a forensic expert in neuropsychology on numerous occasions for both plaintiff and defense attorneys. In recent years, he has presented new ways of thinking about the post-concussion syndrome and vestibular system trauma. He has constructed a vestibular interview to assist clinicians in detecting signs of vestibular involvement after head injury. He has also developed a seven point scale, the MCI Index, to assess the probability or risk of mild cognitive impairment or dementia.
