Dr. Kiernan has specialized in the diagnostic assessment and treatment of mild head injury for over forty years. He was the lead developer of Cognistat, a widely used cognitive screening examination sensitive to brain dysfunction and the MCI Index, a score-based algorithm for rating the degree of generalized cognitive impairment. Over the past fifteen years, he has reconsidered the basis for the post-concussion syndrome diagnosis and shown how it is better explained in terms of vestibular system trauma. He developed a set of interview questions to elicit the primary clinical features of the vestibular trauma syndrome and refined these into an easily administered survey, the Cognistat Vestibular Trauma Survey. More recently, he has explored the philosophic grounding for theories of brain functioning and proposed an original, behavioral understanding of consciousness.
